Welcome to SPJ Leading Edge, a blog built just for chapter leaders. You’ll find tools and information to help build, grow and sustain active and successful chapters, the very backbone of SPJ. We’ll highlight programs, provide “best practices” for things like finance and governance and answer some of the most popular leadership questions. Contact Tara Puckey, SPJ Chapter Coordinator, for anything and everything chapter related.

Resources to help you!

By Heather Dunn | January 16th, 2012

Good afternoon,

We’ve been working hard to put together resources that will help our chapter leaders stay on top of things.  Here are a few for you to check out.

Calendar

We’ve complied important dates all in one place.  You’ll find due dates for chapter related materials, spring conferences, convention deadlines and SPJ/SDX board meetings. Visit this page to view the calendar. We’ll update it as we become aware of new dates. Be sure to bookmark this page so you can check back often to see what’s going on.

Program Ideas

SPJ Leads has been featuring a Program Idea of the Week for the last couple of months.  All of those great ideas have been compiled in one place for you.  Visit the program ideas page for ideas from chapters across the country.  Have a great program idea you’d like to see featured?  Email it to me for consideration.

Model Bylaws

Make sure your chapter’s bylaws hit all the important points!  See a copy of the model bylaws put together by the bylaws committee here.

Downloadable Resources

Contests

By Heather Dunn | January 3rd, 2012

Good afternoon,

The Mark of Excellence and Sigma Delta Chi awards are open for entries. The MOE Awards honor the best in collegiate journalism, and the entry deadline is Jan. 25, 2012. Entries for SDX Awards, for professional journalists, are due by Feb. 9, 2012.

The awards cover online, print, radio and television journalism. To be eligible, work must have been published or broadcast in 2011. Both contests are open to non-members, although SPJ members receive a discount on the entry fee.

Please visit our awards site for more information, and enter online here. Good luck!

Best Wishes,
